For this three-bedroom terraced house in Loughton, the clients wanted a large kitchen diner connected to the garden. We built a rear extension with a vaulted ceiling, three Velux roof windows and bi-folding doors, then opened up the rear wall to bring the new space into the house.
We reconfigured the original kitchen and rear reception room to create the kitchen space, a downstairs WC and a utility area, with the washing machine and tumble dryer stacked inside a cupboard. As the clients’ taste emerged during the build, we made the exposed steel a feature of the room. At their request, we also made rustic scaffold-board shelves with black cast-iron brackets to sit alongside the Benchmarx Soho White kitchen.

The Benchmarx Soho White kitchen has a clean, bright finish. At the clients’ request, we made the rustic shelves from scaffold boards and fitted them with black cast-iron brackets.

The vaulted extension gives the family room space for dining and a home workspace. Knocking through the rear wall helped turn the former kitchen and reception areas into a larger kitchen-diner.

The bi-fold doors open the dining area onto the garden, creating the connection to the outside that the clients wanted from their new rear extension.

As the clients’ taste came through during the build, we decided to leave the steel exposed as a feature. It gives the white kitchen and island a striking contrast.

Three Velux roof windows bring daylight into the vaulted extension, making the dining area feel open and bright throughout the day.
